The Bastard of Istanbul

This book is a must for everyone. It is a lovely introduction to a region that we maybe barely know. I am Mexican and I was fascinated with this insertion into a new culture. It not just increased my appetite for the cuisine, but for the history of the region.

"The Bastard of Istanbul" by Elif Shafak is a book about two families linked by a sadly past: the deportations and massacres of Armenians by the Turks. The protagonist, Asya, drives us together with the Kazanci family through thoughts about identity, love, family, food and above all: self-discovery.

Who are we, who we want to be, what does our country mean to us, what does the history of that country mean, why is it important to know about it, how do we want to deal with violence, ad how do we want to deal with our past.

This book is a collection of vivid female characters, colorful descriptions of Istanbul and descriptive tales.
